Research user group

Patients have always shaped the research we do in the centre.

The research user group (RUG) was established in 2009 by the Centre for Musculoskeletal Research and expanded in 2012.

It is a patient-partner initiative supported by the University, The NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, and Versus Arthritis.

The group is made up of people with an active interest in musculoskeletal health. They are either patients who live with a musculoskeletal condition such as arthritis, lupus or fibromyalgia, or people who care for someone with these conditions.

It is open to people with experience of any musculoskeletal condition, whether it is common or rare.

A primary remit of the group is to advise on planned and current research at the Versus Arthritis Centre for Genetics and Genomics.

It supports the Centre in the following ways:

  • design of research;
  • management of research;
  • dissemination of study results;
  • identification and prioritisation of research topics for investigation.

"Researchers really value our input, as it helps them consider different perspectives and ultimately do better research."
